Mastery - Robert Greene Book Review

Mastery is something very few people achieve throughout their life. When you think of mastery you might think of greats such as Muhammad Ali, Leonardo Di Vinci, Thomas Edison and other famous figures throughout history. While these mentioned were exceptionally talented at their chosen field, they all had mastery in their field.

Mastery is a book by the renowned author Robert Greene who has also written many bestsellers such great book as The Art of Seduction and The 48 Laws of Power. Greene was born in Los Angeles, USA and graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Madison  with a BA in classical studies. Before becoming a successful author, Robert estimates he has worked at over 80 jobs including construction worker and Hollywood movie writer. A great quote by Robert Greene “The future belongs to those who learn more skills and combine them in creative ways.”

In Mastery, Robert Greene discusses and examines great figures past and present such as Charles Darwin, Henry Ford, Freddie Roach - he tells the different traits and factors that made them masters and how you can apply them to your life and become a master in anything. Mastery has reached The New York Times Bestseller list and was also featured in countless publications including; The Huffington Post, CNN Money, Business Insider and Forbes.

For his research of the book, Greene interviewed many different people each successful in their own right. He interviewed people like Paul Graham, Temple Grandin and V.S. Ramachandran . Best Selling author, Tim Ferriss who has written The Four Hour Workweek and The Four Hour Chef also recommends this book highly and says this is one of the best books he has read. Among Tim Ferriss many celebrities and famous figures have praised this book and claim it has changed their life.

The book is just over 350 pages and is packed with useful advice, helpful information and great resources. Mastery was published in 2012 and is the latest book published by Mr Greene. The book is split into six sections and each section deals with different aspects of mastery

Mastery teaches its users many things such as how we should always follow our passion and not just follow a path just for money and fame. Greene talks about following your passion and to be successful truly successful you should follow your passion. Robert gives many examples of people who have followed their passion and gone on to become successful.

He also goes on to tell us how natural talent and skill is not enough to achieve success and mastery. Its all about hard work and persistence and never giving up. He tells us how there are thousands of children who display brilliance, talent and skill but yet few of them go on to achieve. Natural talent or High IQ cannot explain future achievements or success.

Robert Greene tell us how we should all have a mentor how we should learn through existing masters so we can better ourselves:

  • Three steps to finding your area of focus
    • #1 Connect with your inclinations
      • In order to master a field, you must love the subject and feel a profound connection to it. Your interest must transcend the field itself and border on the religious.
    • #2 Choose the right career based on those inclinations…avoid the false path!
      • A false path in life is generally something we are attracted to for the wrong reasons—money, fame, attention, and so on.
    • #3 See your career as a journey with twists and turns. Focus on the long-term
      • The road to mastery requires patience. You will have to keep your focus on five or ten years down the road, when you will reap the rewards of your efforts.

You should also focus on the main things in life and focus on mastering them.

However it does sometimes read like a self-help book and has tendencies of including those classic self help clichés like 'you can do it' and ' if you put your mind to it...' Some people tend to dislike these old clichés however if you can filter past these then you will benefit from this book.

Some of us may never achieve mastery at anything. Realistically it may be either because we are too stupid, too lazy, not enough ambition, too stupid, too happy, not educated enough or have obstacles in place such as looking after children or elderly parents.

Mastery is a great book and if you actually implement the steps found in this book like Always stay focused and Find a mentor. The steps actually do help you and will change your life if you put the steps to action. Many successful people have cited this book as a major influence on their success. Now to leave you with a quote from Robert Greene, “The key then to attaining this higher level of intelligence is to make our years of study qualitatively rich. We don't simply absorb information - we internalize it and make it our own by finding some way to put this knowledge to practical use.”
